Chapter 6

HAVE FAITH!

A person of faith is undeterred by failure, by obstacles or by naysayers.  These people understand that failure is a frequent companion to faith, and with each stumble they come nearer they  goal.  It is true not because everyone reacts the same way to adversity, but because of they faith, some adjust in the process.

I am fortunate to have had a long and gratifying friendship with the Reverend Oscar Burnett, O.S.B., Abbot Emeritus of Belmont Abbey in Belmont, North Carolina.  I met Father Oscar when I arrived at Belmont Abbey College as an 18-year-old freshman.  He was then acting as head of campus ministry.  He reached out to the freshmen and involved many of us in campus coffeehouse functions. His hearty laugh, caring demeanor and listening skills  pulled many students through trying times.  Father Oascar, and a few others, never wavered in their faith in me, and because of their interest, I have overcome quite a few daunting challenges.  A simple, kind word may be all it takes to help someone gather the strength to move forward.

Chapter 5

BE REASON ABLE

"People experience myriad emotions when confronted with a statement or behavior that is contradictory to the beliefs we picked up early in life.  I remember seeing an African-American for the first time when I was four. My feeling was one of novelty.  I had not been embedded with any sort of negative belief about African-Americans.  I also recall my confusion when, several years later, a primary school teacher admonished me for wearing the hat of a black boy, by telling me I may "catch something."  Why didn't she say that when I was wearing a white boy's hat?  The law of contradiction says that something can NOT BE and ALSO BE at the same time.  This was my first experience with that law.

One of my relatives has a deep fear that people of a certain race are going to to do him harm.  He was taught this concept as a child to keep him away from members of that group. When this relative has more than casual conversations with members of this "harmful" race, he often comments about the nice person he just encountered. The group appears "abnormal", but the individuals seem very "normal."  The individual encounters don't validate his beliefs about the group, yet the beliefs ingrained early on have only slightly dissolved".

In the final analysis, your attitude determines your effectiveness in everything, every time!

CHAPTER 4

AN ALL THE TIME JOB...

"If I am dedicated to fully developing my spiritual being, I am going to live the beliefs I hold.  I can't just read scripture or go through some weekly ceremony.  I must take the message and make it real in the world I inhabit.  I must be the voice and the arms of the message.  The impact I have on every human I encounter, and on those I will touch through my actions in my professional and family life, is a manifestation of my spiritual self.  I call this faith.  It is also love and ambition, and I will attain it by using the same formula.

The three areas above - ambition, love and faith - are not either/or choices.  They are each a complement to the others.  When they are treated as either/or, we loose the way to happiness and fulfillment.

Your ambition, your love and your faith are all products of your attitude!  A positive attitude will seek an environment where your professional goals are nurtured and realized with the cooperation of others.  A positive attitude will allow you to understand the idiosyncrasies of others and respect their viewpoints even when in direct conflict with your own.  A positive attitude will help you see the sameness in every individual".
